Carnivore (splatter)

Released in 1985, Carnivore is the ferocious debut album by the Brooklyn metal band Carnivore, fronted by Peter Steele (later of Type O Negative). It stands as one of the rawest and most apocalyptic statements of the 1980s underground metal scene - a volatile mix of thrash, hardcore punk, and post-nuclear fantasy. The album's concept envisions a devastated future where survivors form brutal tribes, embracing violence, survivalism, and nihilism. Songs like "Predator," "Legion of Doom," and "God Is Dead" channel this dystopian chaos through pounding riffs, shouted vocals, and militaristic rhythms. Lyrically, it blends dark humor, social satire, and cold-war paranoia - reflecting the tensions of the Reagan era and New York's decaying urban landscape. Musically, it's aggressive and primal, fusing metal's heaviness with punk's raw speed and attitude. Though initially polarizing, Carnivore became a cult classic, influencing countless crossover and industrial metal acts. It set the stage for Peter Steele's later transformation into the gothic grandeur of Type O Negative, but here, everything is still stripped down, feral, and scorched by nuclear fire. Here comes the reissue as gatefold, red with black splatter vinyl.
